About Will Stephen

Will Stephen ~ The Black Swan

September 16, 1936 - April 11, 2001

Artist, Poet, Visionary, Inventor and Philosopher

When Will was a small child his Mother encouraged him to draw.  He began painting and drawing consistently from the age of 5.  At age 12 he was commissioned by his Father’s friend to do a portrait of his wife.  Portraiture became the catalyst for earning money while he was very young.

Will grew up in Northern Wisconsin.  He was attracted to nature, spending much time outdoors.  That became some of his first subject matter, horses being his favorite things to draw.  At the age of 14 he was consigned to paint murals in Palm Beach Florida.  He drew and painted a lot during his teenage years, another of his favorite subjects being nudes using live models.

Will attended the University of Miami, the Paire Art School in New Haven Connecticut, and eventually ended up in New York to attend the best art school in the world at the time, The Art Students League.

During the 50’s and 60’s in his early career in New York, Will was commissioned to do portraits of Frank Sinatra, Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood, Benny Goodman and various other famous musicians and celebrities.  While in Manhattan, his agent at the time was the William Morris Theatrical Agency, same agent as The Rat Pack.  His New York City art career boasted very successful and lucrative.

From 1958-1963 he designed and managed the world’s #1 Jazz Club, Basin Street East.  He excelled in stage design, having done all the lighting for the musicians there.  The Jazz club hosted such acts as Peggy Lee, Barbara Streisand, Lenny Bruce and Redd Foxx.

He was commissioned for the New York World’s Fair in 1965 as an American artist.

After leaving New York in 1963 he moved to Hollywood Florida. He procured many murals there and other works including album covers.  He enjoyed the slower pace of Florida, after having lived in New York City for almost 20 years.  From there he spent a short time in Chicago and produced more murals, including one of his highlights, “Garden of Bacchus”.  There he began writing his philosophical theories about cooperation and competition.

In 1985 he moved to Northern California, choosing to live a life of solitude where his daily activities included painting, drawing and writing.  He passed on April 11, 2001 from heart failure.  He amassed a large volume of work, which is now available to the public.
